Nthobokae (Nthobi) Angel   |  

Non-executive Chairperson

Ms Angel chairs a women’s investment Group, TsaRona Investments, she is a director of Batho Bonke Capital, a trustee of ABSA Foundation and Kagiso Trust, a board member of Deloitte Chartered Accountants (SA). She has extensive knowledge of the African continent and is a director of the Southern African Research and Documentation Centre (SARDC). She is active in nature conservation and is a director of the Open Africa Initiative and the Peace Parks Foundation

From 1994 to 1995, Ms Angel was the public affairs manager at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer SA (Proprietary) Limited. Thereafter she was appointed as general manager: Corporate Affairs at Engen Petroleum Limited, a position she held until early 2000, when she was appointed as executive director: Strategic Affairs at Engen.

From 2001 to 2003 Ms Angel was seconded to the Presidency by Engen, as Chief Operations Officer: Strategic Planning and Communications. She is one of the founding directors of Batho Bonke Capital, which holds 10% equity in ABSA bank. From 2004 to 2005 she was appointed as CEO of Mvelaphanda Resources. Her last full time employment was with Eskom, as Managing Director External Relations, she resigned June 2006 to focus on her role as Chair of TsaRona Investments. Ms Angel is fluent in seven languages including and Kiswahili.

Kgomotso Matseke   |  

Group Managing Director

Kgomotso served as the head of the Actis Africa Empowerment Fund (“AAEF”) a division of private equity firm Actis Africa Limited aimed at funding black-owned companies. He joined Actis in 2005 and was instrumental in the establishment of the AAEF.

Kgomotso has an average of 11 years of empowerment financing and significant emerging markets experience. He has extensive expertise in BEE transaction negotiation, restructuring, funding, managing investments across several industries including financial services, transport and logistics, mining, property, engineering, petrochemicals and infrastructure. Kgomotso was appointed as Group Managing Director with effect from 1 May 2010.

Joyce Matlala   |  

Executive Financial Director of the Kagiso Group

Joyce is the Group Financial Director of Kagiso Trust Investments ("KTI"). She joined KTI in January 2006. She was previously the Chief Financial Officer of the Development Bank of South Africa ("DBSA"). She has also spent a period of three and a half years in various roles at the Industrail Development Corporation ("IDC"), including Project Finance and Private Equity.

Joyce is a Chartered Accountant and completed articles with Arthur Andersen & Co. She serves on boards of a number of companies including Incwala Resources, Merafe Resources and INCA.

Afzal Patel   |  

Managing Director of Kagiso Ventures

Afzal Patel is currently the Managing Director of Kagiso Ventures (Pty) Limited and has over fifteen years’ experience in corporate finance, private equity and financial services.

Afzal obtained a BCom degree in 1990, and a B. Acc degree in 1991 from the University of the Witwatersrand and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1994 having served his articles with Deloitte & Touche.

Previously a director of Fusion Capital Corporate Finance, a division of Fusion Capital, a company listed on the JSE Securities Exchange, Afzal was involved in a diverse range of corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions activities, particularly in the field of black economic empowerment.

He joined the Kagiso Group in 2001, and is a director of a number of the investee companies in the Kagiso Ventures portfolio.

Hylton Appelbaum   |  

Non-executive director

Hylton is an Executive Director of the Liberty Group and Executive Trustee of The Liberty Foundation and of The Donald Gordon Foundation. He is Chairman of the Mindset Network and a director of The Synergos Institute, a US based non-profit which develops effectve, sustainable and locally rooted solutions to proverty.

He is a member of Council of the University of the Witwatersrand, and is a trustee of the Wits Law School Endowment Appeal.

Hylton is a member of PricewaterhouseCoopers' Corporate Social Responsibility Board and is a trustee, and judge, of the national Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust and a trustee of the Helen Suzman Foundation. He is also a trustee of The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and sits on its allocations committee.

Jan Dreyer   |  

Non-executive director

Jan Dreyer has a B.Com.(Law) degree, an L.Lb. degree, Higher Diploma in Tax and Higher Diploma in Company Law and completed articles at Edward Nathan Friedland Mansell & Lewis where he was admitted as an attorney in 1975.

He then joined Hofmeyr van der Merwe & Botha as a corporate lawyer, became a partner in 1978 and the chairman of the firm in 1993. He retired at the end of 1999 by which time the firm had grown to the largest practice in South Africa at that time. It was also the first Black Empowered large firm in South Africa.

In 2000 he joined Rembrandt Group Ltd as an executive director. Upon the split of that company into Remgro Ltd and Venfin Ltd, became a non-executive director of each of those companies. On 25 November 2008 he again became an executive director of Remgro.

Jan was a non-executive director of Rand Merchant Bank Ltd and RMB Holdings Ltd, of that company. He was a non-executive director of Avis Southern Africa Ltd in 1997 and held that position until it was delisted pursuant to the Barlowrand takeover in May 2004. He assisted in privatising the air traffic and navigation services of the Department of Transport in August 1997 and served as a director of ATNS Ltd until July 2001.

Janie was appointed to the board on 28 May 2010. He is currently the Chief Investment Officer of Remgro Ltd since 20 November 2009 and was previously Financial Director of VenFin Ltd and Chief Executive Officer of VenFin Ltd since 17 May 2006.

Bertina Engelbrecht   |  

Non-executive director

Bertina Engelbrecht is the Group HR Director for the New Clicks group and was formally appointed to its Board in 2008. Prior to this, Bertina worked for the Shell group as General Manager (HR and Services) for Shell Southern Africa. She has more than 15 year’s HR and general management experience in the retail, petrochemical, deep-sea fishing, and aviation and rail commuter industries. Benefiting from the American Field Services (AFS) scholarship, Bertina completed her matric in California, where after she gained her B.Proc from UWC.

She also holds a Masters in Commercial Law degree from UCT and has completed a Management Development Programme at the US Business School, the Shell HR Learning curriculum offered jointly by INSEAD and Cornel University and the GIBS Personal Leadership Effectiveness programme.

Bertina was admitted to as an attorney in 1989 and is an affiliate member of the IIA (SA).

Neil Morrison   |  

Non-executive director

Neil is a self employed property developer and entrepreneur with interests in various property developments. He was previously the chief executive officer and managing director of Deutsche Bank AG and also held the positions of Head: Global Markets and chair of the Transformation Committee. Neil was also the National Policy Co-ordinator (Money and Finance): Department of Economic Planning for the African National Congress. He serves on the board of Mindev (a subsidiary of Mintek).

Neil has a BSc in physics and applied physics as well as BSc Honours in physics. He has completed courses in Macroeconomic Management (World Bank), Financial Planning (IMF), Global Financial Markets and Deutsche Morgan Grenfell Directors Training Programme (INSEAD).

Dean Zwo Nevhutalu   |

Dean Zwoitwaho Nevhutalu is a trustee of Kagiso Trust and the superintendent general of the Limpopo Provincial Department of Education. Nevhutalu holds a diploma in theology, bachelor of theology; Honours in theology, LLB, LLB masters and certificates in Prject Management, Effective Director Management and Public Finance Management Act. He has occupied leadership roles in various institutions. Nevhutalu served as the general manager and provincial electoral officer of the Limpopo province, provincial office of the Independent Electoral Commission; where his core duties included development of strategic and operational plans of the office and interacting with both internal and external stakeholders. “Zwo” as he is affectionately known was also previously chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission in the province as well as chairperson of the Institute of Contextual Theology and Educational Aid Programme, Transvaal branch. His involvement in community programmes includes being chairperson of Ecumenical Confessing Fellowship and also Educational Aid Programme. He served as pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1985 – 1994 and later became dean and bishop of the same church. Zwo has also been involved in the monitoring of the DRC presidential elections. He is a member of the National Project Consolidate Advisory Working Group; chairperson of Kagiso Trust Consultancy and served on the boards of Transitional National Development Trust; CODESA; and Mulweli Counselling Centre

Bongiwe Njobe   |  

Non-executive director

Ms Bongiwe Nomande Njobe is the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs for Tiger Brands.  Prior to her current appointment, Ms Njobe was Director of Corporate Affairs for South African Breweries. She was also Director General of the National Department of Agriculture in South Africa, where she was responsible for the development and implementation of agricultural policy and co-ordination of its implementation across the 9 provincial departments of agriculture as well as representing the South African government internationally on matters of Agricultural Policy. Ms Njobe has served on the Boards of various private sectors, international, NGO and parastatal organisations over the past few decades, and currently Chairperson of the Kagiso Trust, is the Deputy Chairperson of the National Business Initiate, and serves as a non-executive Director of the Industrial Development Corporation and McCain Foods. She holds a MSc. Degree in Agriculture from the Vassil Kolarov University in Bulgaria.

Alan Romanis   |  

Non-executive director

Alan is a chartered accountant and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. He joined the Liberty Life Group in 1975 and worked his way up to Vice Chairman in 1998 until his retirement in 2000. Alan has vast experience in financial services locally and abroad at several companies, including PricewaterhouseCoopers and Fidelity Life Assurance.

Kgotso Schoeman   |  

Non-executive director

Kgotso is the Chief Executive of Kagiso Trust. He is a well-known community development activist and continues to play an active role in his hometown, Alexandra Township, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was part of the team that planned and implemented a successful fund-raising campaign which resulted in partnerships between national, international donor agencies and the local private sector. The funds raised were used to develop and build a multi-purpose community facility, which is today an integral part of the overall development of Alexandra. Mr. Schoeman has worked as a trainer in the NGO and CBO sector for over five years in areas such as proposal wiring, managing community-based organizations, and addressing conflict in communities.

Bishop Mazwi Tisani   |

Bishop Tisani has been a Trustee of the Kagiso Trust since 1993. Following a stint as Archdeacon of King Williamstown, he became Bishop in 2002. He has also served as personal assistant to Bishop Desmond Tutu. Bishop Tisani has a degree in Theology, a Bachelor of Arts, Honours and a Master of Arts from the University of Oxford.
